How Often Should You Test Your Private Well Water?
If you're on city water, somebody in a lab tests it constantly and has to tell you when something's wrong. If you're on a private well, that somebody is you. There's no utility, no annual report in the mail, no regulator checking your tap. The well is yours, and so is the testing.
The catch is that the contaminants worth worrying about most β bacteria, nitrate, arsenic β have no color, no smell, and no taste. Your water can look crystal clear straight from the tap and still carry something you'd want to know about. Testing is the only way to see what your senses can't.
The once-a-year baseline
The CDC and EPA both land on the same core recommendation for a private well: test at least once a year for the basics. That annual check covers:
- Total coliform bacteria β the flag that says surface contamination or a cracked casing is letting stuff into your water. It's the single most important yearly test.
- Nitrate β especially in farm country. The drinking-water limit is 10 milligrams per liter, and levels above that are genuinely dangerous for infants (it's what causes "blue baby syndrome").
- pH β acidic water eats copper pipes and leaches metals into your glass.
- Total dissolved solids β a general read on overall water quality and hardness.
An annual coliform and nitrate test is cheap β usually somewhere in the range of a nice dinner out β and it's the floor, not the ceiling.
Test more often when something changes
The once-a-year rule assumes a quiet, stable well. Real life isn't always quiet. Run a test right away, outside the normal schedule, any time:

The less-frequent, region-specific tests
Some contaminants come straight out of the rock your well sits in, and they don't change fast. You don't need to check for them every year, but you should check at least once β and again every few years β depending on where you live:
- Arsenic and uranium β naturally occurring in a lot of bedrock. If your area is known for either, test and then recheck every 3 to 5 years.
- Radon in water β worth checking if your region runs high for radon in the air.
- Lead β which almost never comes from the well itself but from older plumbing between the well and your tap.
- PFAS β the newer 'forever chemical' concern, especially near industry, airports, or military sites.
Joe tested his well exactly once β the day he bought the house, because the bank made him. That was eleven years ago. The water still tastes fine, so as far as Joe's concerned the matter's closed. What Joe doesn't know is that the septic tank two lots uphill developed a slow leak three summers back, and his coliform count has been creeping up ever since. It's the kind of thing a $30 annual test would've caught the first year. Joe will find out the expensive way, the same as he always does. Don't be Joe. A sample bottle costs less than a tank of gas.
Where to get it done
Use a state-certified lab, not just a kit off the shelf β the certified result is the one that actually means something and the one a buyer or health department will accept. Your county health department or state environmental agency keeps a list of certified labs, and many hand out free sample bottles.
