Why Is My Well Water Suddenly Cloudy or Milky?
You fill a glass at the kitchen tap and it comes out cloudy white, like watered-down milk. Then you set it on the counter and watch. What happens in the next couple of minutes tells you almost everything you need to know, and it costs nothing to run the test.
Test one: does it clear from the bottom up?
Set the glass down and don't touch it. If the cloudiness clears from the bottom of the glass toward the top over about 30 seconds to two minutes, you have air. Millions of tiny bubbles coming out of solution and rising. That's the most common cause of milky well water and it's harmless β it's the same thing that happens when you pour a soda.
Air in the line usually means one of a few things: a waterlogged or failing pressure tank, a small leak on the suction side of the pump pulling air in, or a well that's drawing down close to the pump and gulping air at the bottom of the cycle. None of it will hurt you to drink, but a pressure tank that's letting air through is often a pressure tank that's on its way out β and that's the same part that causes short-cycling and dead pumps down the road.
Test two: does it clear from the top down, or settle out?
If the water clears from the top downward, or leaves a layer of grit or fine silt on the bottom of the glass after it sits, that's sediment β sand, clay, silt, or rust particles. A sudden onset of this is worth paying attention to. Causes include:
- A new well or one that was just serviced (it'll clear on its own in a few days of use).
- The pump sitting too low in the well and stirring up the bottom.
- A cracked or failing well casing or screen letting fine material in.
- Heavy rain or snowmelt after a nearby event β surface water reaching your aquifer means the well may not be sealed the way it should be, and that's a contamination concern, not just a cosmetic one.
Test three: it stays cloudy no matter how long it sits
If the glass never clears β no rising bubbles, no settling grit, just a persistent haze β you're likely looking at something dissolved: high dissolved solids, or dissolved iron or manganese that turns cloudy and then rusty-orange as it hits air and oxidizes. Cloudy water that later stains your fixtures and laundry orange or brown is the classic iron signature.

When cloudy water is actually a warning
The two versions worth taking seriously are grit that showed up suddenly, and any cloudiness that arrives alongside a new smell or right after heavy rain or flooding. Both can mean surface water is getting into a well that's supposed to be sealed off from it β and surface water carries bacteria.
