How Often Should You Test Your Well Water β€” and For What?

Move from a city house to one on a private well and you inherit a job you probably didn't know existed: you are now your own water utility. A municipal system tests its water constantly and mails you a report every year. Your well tests exactly as often as you decide to test it, which for a lot of owners is "never, until something tastes off." That's a gamble, because the contaminants most worth catching β€” bacteria and nitrate chief among them β€” are invisible and have no taste.

So how often is often enough, and what are you even testing for? The EPA has a straightforward baseline, and then a list of "test right now" triggers on top of it. We'll cover both, and yes, we'll check in on Joe, whose approach to water testing is the same as his approach to everything else.

The once-a-year baseline

The EPA recommends testing a private well at least once a year for a core panel:

  • Total coliform bacteria β€” an indicator that surface contamination is reaching your well.
  • Nitrate β€” especially important in farm country, and genuinely dangerous for infants.
  • Total dissolved solids (TDS) β€” a general read on what's dissolved in your water.
  • pH β€” too low and your water is corrosive, eating pipes and leaching metals.

That annual test is cheap insurance. Bacteria and nitrate are the two that can make you sick without ever changing how the water looks, smells, or tastes, which is exactly why "it seems fine" is not a testing strategy.

The contaminants most likely to hurt you are the ones you can't detect at the tap. That's the entire argument for testing on a schedule instead of testing on a hunch.

The "test right now" triggers

Beyond the yearly check, the EPA says to test immediately when any of these happen:

Match the test to your surroundings

The core panel is the floor, not the ceiling. What's around your property tells you what else to add:

  • Intensive agriculture nearby? Add nitrate, nitrite, pesticides, and coliform bacteria.
  • Old plumbing or lead service lines? Add lead, copper, and pH.
  • Radon-rich region? Radon can enter through well water as well as soil β€” worth a check.
  • Stained fixtures, scaly buildup, or soap that won't lather? Iron, manganese, and hardness β€” quality-of-life issues rather than health ones, but still worth knowing.
  • Salty taste near a heavily salted road? Chloride, sodium, and TDS.

One rule that trips people up: use a state-certified drinking-water laboratory, not a hardware-store strip. Many county health departments will point you to a certified lab, and some offer testing for free or cheap. Joe β€” the well-neglecting legend himself β€” is very proud that he tested his water. Once. Sixteen years ago. Since then a new hog operation went in up the road, and Joe's nitrate has been quietly climbing the whole time. He can't taste it. He feels fine. So in his mind, the water is fine.

His daughter and her new baby came to stay for a month. Nitrate is one of the few contaminants that's genuinely hazardous to infants. Joe had no idea what his current number was, because his last data point predated the smartphone. One $30 test would have told him. Don't be Joe. Test yearly, and test when things change.

The bottom line

Put a reminder on the calendar for the same month every year β€” spring is a good default, after the ground thaws and any snowmelt has moved through. Run the core panel yearly, add tests that match what's around you, and test immediately after floods, repairs, or any change in the water. Owning a well isn't hard. It just means the testing is your job now, and it's a job that pays off the one year it catches something.
