Is Your Well About to Run Dry? Read the Warning Signs First

Come late summer, the phone starts ringing with the same call: the water's gone weird, or it's gone entirely, and the homeowner is sure the pump died. Sometimes it did. But a lot of the time the pump is fine β€” it's just reaching for water that isn't there anymore, because the water table dropped out from under it. A well running dry almost never happens without a warning, and if you know what to listen for you can usually get ahead of it.

Your well is a straw in a moving pond

Groundwater isn't an underground lake. It's water filling the pore spaces and cracks in soil and rock, and the top of that saturated zone β€” the water table β€” rises and falls with the seasons. It goes up with spring snowmelt and rain, and it drops through a dry summer as plants, wells, and slow drainage pull water out faster than it's replaced. Your well casing goes down to some depth, and your pump hangs at some point inside it. As long as the water table stays above the pump, you have water. In a bad drought year, that table can drop below where your pump sits β€” and a well that's served a family for twenty years suddenly can't keep up.

The warning signs, in the order you'll usually notice them

  • Pressure fades late in the day. The well recovers overnight when nobody's drawing on it, then can't keep up by evening after showers, laundry, and irrigation. Morning's fine, night's weak. That's the water level getting tight.
  • Sputtering, spitting air from the taps. When the level drops to near the pump, it starts sucking in air along with water. You get faucets that cough and spit. That's the pump gasping β€” don't ignore it.
  • Cloudy, sandy, or gritty water. A pump running low pulls harder near the bottom of the well and drags up sediment it never used to touch.
  • The pump runs longer, or won't shut off. It's working harder to move less water, so run times stretch out.
A pump that runs dry doesn't just leave you without water β€” it burns itself up. Most submersible pumps are cooled by the very water they're pumping. Run one dry for long and you're buying a pump on top of your water problem.

What's actually fixable β€” and what isn't

The good news: "running dry" is often a fixable geometry problem, not a dead well. Common fixes, cheapest to priciest:

  • Lower the pump. If there's still water and casing below the pump, a well pro can drop the pump deeper so it stays submerged when the table falls. Often the simplest answer.
  • Cut back and let it recover. Spread out heavy water use β€” don't run irrigation, laundry, and long showers back to back β€” so the well's recovery rate can keep up. This alone gets a lot of families through a dry August.
  • Add storage. A cistern or storage tank buffers a low-yield well so a slow-recovering well can fill a tank overnight for you to draw on during the day.
  • Deepen the well or drill a new one. The last resort, and the expensive one β€” but sometimes the aquifer at your old depth just isn't producing anymore and you have to reach a deeper one.

Joe β€” the septic-ignoring, well-neglecting legend himself β€” noticed his water going soft in the evenings all through July. Instead of easing off, he figured he'd "flush the system out" by running the sprinkler all night AND filling the stock tank at the same time. The pump spat air, then quit. What Joe had was a water table three feet below his pump by August and a well that recovered just fine if you gave it a few hours. What Joe got, by running it dry all night, was a cooked submersible pump. The well was never the problem. Joe was the problem.

The bottom line

If your well is fading in the evenings, spitting air, or running cloudy this time of year, don't assume the worst and don't just push it harder β€” that's how a temporary low-water spell turns into a burned-up pump. Back off the heavy use, note when it happens, and get a well pro to check the static water level and pump depth. Most "dry" wells this summer aren't dead. They're just reaching a little too high for water that's dropped a little too low.
