Lead in Your Well Water Almost Never Comes From the Well

People hear "lead in the water" and picture some tainted underground spring. On a private well, that's almost never the story. Lead is not usually sitting in your aquifer. It's sitting in your house - in old pipes, in brass fittings, in the solder joints of your plumbing - and your own water is what pulls it out.

The EPA says it straight: lead gets into drinking water "when plumbing materials that contain lead corrode, especially where the water has high acidity or low mineral content that corrodes pipes and fixtures." That's the whole mechanism in one sentence, and it's exactly the situation a lot of well owners are in without knowing it.

Why well water is a setup for this

A public water system is required to treat its water so it's less corrosive - that's the entire point of the EPA's corrosion-control rules. Nobody does that for you on a private well. If your well water is naturally acidic (low pH) or "soft" in the sense of low dissolved minerals, it's chemically hungry. Run that water through copper pipe with lead solder joints, or a brass fitting, and it slowly dissolves metal on its way to your tap.

If you've ever seen blue-green stains in your sinks or pinhole leaks in copper lines, that's the same acidic water at work - and it's a flashing warning sign that if there's any lead in your plumbing, it's being leached too.

The aquifer isn't the problem. The last 40 feet of pipe between the well and your glass usually is.

Where the lead actually hides

  • Lead solder. Homes plumbed before 1986 commonly used lead-based solder on copper joints. That's the classic source.
  • Brass fixtures. Even "lead-free" brass was allowed to contain some lead until the standard tightened. The current federal limit is a weighted average of 0.25 percent lead across wetted surfaces - low, but not zero, and older fixtures predate even that.
  • Older pumps and fittings. Some legacy submersible pump components and check valves used leaded brass too.

Why it's worth taking seriously

The EPA and CDC both state there is no known safe level of lead in a child's blood. EPA estimates drinking water can account for 20 percent or more of a person's total lead exposure, and for infants on mixed formula it can be 40 to 60 percent. You can't see, smell, or taste it, so the only way to know is to test.

What to actually do

  • Test your water for lead. A certified lab test typically runs between $20 and $100. This is the only way to know - there's no home symptom that reliably tells you.
  • Fix the corrosivity, not just the symptom. If your water is acidic, an acid-neutralizer (calcite or soda-ash system) raises pH so the water stops eating your pipes. That protects against lead AND the copper pinhole leaks and blue-green staining.
  • Flush before you drink. Water that's been sitting in the pipes overnight picks up the most metal. Run the tap until it turns cold before drinking or filling a pot. Use cold water only for drinking and cooking - hot water dissolves lead faster, and boiling does not remove it.
  • Clean your aerators. Lead particles collect in the little faucet screens. Rinse them out periodically.
  • Use a certified filter if needed. If a test comes back high, use a filter certified specifically to remove lead, and replace the cartridge on schedule.
