Nitrates in Well Water: The Contaminant You Can't See, Smell, or Taste
Most well problems announce themselves. Sulfur smells, orange stains, cloudy water β you notice, you react. Nitrate does none of that. It's colorless, odorless, and completely tasteless. A glass of water with a dangerous nitrate level looks and tastes exactly like a glass of clean water. The only way to know is a lab test, and that's precisely what makes it the contaminant rural well owners should take most seriously.
Where it comes from
Nitrate is nitrogen that's been through the natural cycle and turned into a form that dissolves easily in water and moves fast through soil. The big sources in well country are exactly what you'd expect: nitrogen fertilizer washing down off cropland, manure from livestock operations, and β closer to home β a failing septic system or a well set too close to the leach field. It's especially a problem in shallow wells and sandy soils where surface water reaches the aquifer quickly.
The U.S. Geological Survey has mapped elevated nitrate across the country's big agricultural belts for decades. If you live surrounded by row crops or feedlots and you're on a private well, you are in the group that ought to test.
Why the 10 comes up so much
The EPA's legal limit for nitrate in drinking water is 10 milligrams per liter (measured as nitrogen). That number isn't arbitrary. Above it, nitrate becomes a real danger to infants under about six months old. In a baby's system, nitrate interferes with the blood's ability to carry oxygen, a condition doctors call methemoglobinemia β the old name is "blue baby syndrome" because it can literally turn an infant's skin bluish. It's rare, but it's serious, and it's the reason the standard is set where it is.
That's the trap a lot of folks fall into. The instinct with bad water is to boil it. For nitrate, boiling makes it worse. So does an ordinary carbon pitcher filter, which doesn't touch it.

For most households a reverse-osmosis unit at the kitchen tap is the practical answer β it gives you clean water for drinking and cooking, which is where the risk lives. Whichever route you take, retest after it's installed to confirm the system is doing its job.
Joe's well sat about forty feet from a field that got a good dose of nitrogen every spring, and downhill from the barn to boot. His water always looked crystal clear, so he figured he'd won the well lottery. When his daughter had a baby and the pediatrician asked whether the well had ever been tested for nitrate, Joe realized he had no idea. The lab came back at 14 mg/L.
