PFAS in Your Well Water: What the EPA's New Limits Mean for Private Wells

In 2024 the EPA finalized the first national drinking-water standard for a group of chemicals called PFAS β€” "per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances," the ones you've probably heard called "forever chemicals." The headline number was a limit of 4 parts per trillion for two of the most common ones, PFOA and PFOS. Parts per trillion is an almost absurdly small amount β€” think one drop in a stretch of Olympic swimming pools β€” which tells you how seriously the science takes this stuff.

Here's the part that catches well owners off guard: that rule applies to public water systems β€” the utility that pipes water to a city or a subdivision. If you're on a private well, the Safe Drinking Water Act doesn't cover you. No utility is testing your water, no agency is required to send you a notice, and no one is on the hook to fix a high number but you. That's true of every contaminant on a private well, and PFAS is no exception.

What PFAS is and how it gets into a well

PFAS is a family of thousands of man-made chemicals that have been used since the 1950s in nonstick cookware, stain- and water-resistant fabrics, food packaging, and firefighting foam. They earned the "forever" nickname because they don't meaningfully break down in the environment β€” they move through soil and into groundwater and just stay there.

That means your risk is mostly about what's near or upgradient of your well: a manufacturing site, an airport or military base that used firefighting foam, a landfill, or fields where certain biosolids were spread. If none of that is anywhere near you, your odds are lower. But because PFAS has no color, no smell, and no taste, the only way to actually know is a lab test.

No color, no smell, no taste, and it doesn't break down. The only way to know PFAS is in your well is to send a sample to a lab that specifically tests for it.

Testing is different from your usual well test

A standard well-water panel β€” coliform bacteria, nitrates, hardness, iron β€” does not include PFAS. It's a separate, specialized test, and it has to be done by a lab that's certified for it, using clean sampling procedures (PFAS is in so many everyday products that a sloppy sample gets contaminated by the person taking it). Your state health department or state environmental agency can usually point you to a certified lab, and some states have run free or low-cost PFAS testing programs for private wells in affected areas.

If your number comes back high

The good news is that PFAS is treatable at the tap. Three approaches are proven: granular activated carbon (a big carbon filter), reverse osmosis (usually installed under the kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water), and certain ion-exchange resins. Which one fits depends on your levels and how much water you need to treat. A pitcher filter off the store shelf is not a reliable fix for PFAS β€” don't count on one.

Joe β€” the same well-neglecting legend who let his septic wipes clog his filter over on Talkin' Crap β€” heard "forever chemicals" on the news and decided it didn't apply to him because his water "tastes fine." Which is exactly the trap: PFAS doesn't taste like anything. Joe's well happens to sit a half-mile downhill from an old fire-training pit, which is about the worst neighbor a well can have for this. He still hasn't tested. Don't be Joe β€” at least find out whether you're near a source before you decide you're fine.

Bottom line

The EPA's 2024 limits are real and strict, but they protect people on city water, not on private wells. If you own your well, you're your own water utility β€” and that includes deciding whether PFAS is a risk where you live. It isn't a test everyone needs. It's a test worth taking seriously if you're anywhere near a known source, because it's the one contaminant your senses will never warn you about.
