Rotten Egg Smell From Your Well? That's Hydrogen Sulfide
You turn on the tap and the bathroom smells like a hard-boiled egg went bad. That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in your water. People notice it at concentrations as low as a few parts per billion β which is why a smell you can barely measure can still clear a room.
The good news: at the levels found in most private wells, hydrogen sulfide is a nuisance, not a poison. It stinks, it corrodes, and it tarnishes silver, but it isn't going to make a healthy person sick. The bad news: chasing it without figuring out the source first is how people spend money on the wrong fix.
Run one quick test before you call anyone
Before you spend a dollar, do this. Run the cold tap and smell it. Then run the hot tap and smell that. Which faucet stinks tells you most of the story.

If it's only the hot water
This one is common and cheap to chase. Most water heaters have a sacrificial anode rod β usually magnesium β that protects the tank from corroding. In water with sulfate and the right bacteria, that magnesium rod drives a reaction that pumps out hydrogen sulfide. Swapping the magnesium rod for an aluminum-zinc rod, or flushing and disinfecting the tank, often ends it. Turning the heater up to around 160Β°F for a few hours can knock back the bacteria too β just be careful of scald risk afterward and turn it back down.
If it's the cold water too
Now it's coming from the source. Two things produce it. Some aquifers β especially those in contact with shale, coal seams, or peat β carry dissolved hydrogen sulfide straight out of the rock. Or you've got sulfur bacteria: harmless-to-drink microbes that live in low-oxygen water and breathe sulfur instead of oxygen, giving off the gas as they go. These same bacteria leave a black slime in toilet tanks and can plug up a well over time.

What actually fixes source-side sulfide
- Shock chlorination of the well knocks back a bacterial problem β but if the bacteria are established, the smell often comes back in weeks to months.
- Oxidation plus filtration is the durable answer for gas coming from the water. Air injection, or a chlorine/peroxide feed followed by a filter, turns the dissolved gas into solid sulfur that gets filtered out. Systems built for iron and manganese often handle sulfide in the same pass.
- Activated carbon handles very light odors but loads up fast at higher concentrations β it's a polish, not a workhorse.
